Day Nurse For Grace

Mom spent another calm day with Grace today. I was mistaken in the last post - she did not meet with Medicaid today. She met with who will be Grace's day nurse when Grace comes home. She will be there five days a week and a night nurse is still in the works. Mom got to ask the nurse some questions and one of the questions Mom asked was how long she stays with a specific patient. This nurse has stayed with previous patients for years. We are praying for healing to be seen in the natural before that point, but it was a relief to Mom to know this nurse was committed for the long haul.

The financial aid department at children's is incredible according to Mom and has helped the family figure out all the details for bringing Grace home from the financial perspective. They have had to go through an awfully lot of red tape as you can imagine.

Mom and Dad continue to learn things in order to take care of Grace at home. They will be learning CPR soon which is one of the last big things that they need to accomplish before bringing her home.

Tomorrow, Mom plans to bring the oldest son to the hospital to visit Grace and then go to the zoo with both boys.

The move continues to be scheduled for Saturday. If you are in the area and would like to help I am sure they would very much appreciate it!

Please Pray For:
  • Praise for another calm day
  • Praise for time with the boys tomorrow
  • Praise for the financial aid department at children's
  • Praise for a consistent day nurse for Grace
  • Prayer for ceasing in storming permanently
  • Prayer for smooth move
  • Prayer for financial provision (Please e-mail info@gracegoodday.com if you would like to help in this area).

Grace switched up her storming pattern a bit last night. She stormed last night for 12 hours rather than the typical 18-24 hours, but she went less time in between storming episodes. Mom and Dad are trying hard not to over analyze things and to be thankful for every step forward. Due to the storming last night Grace was asleep most of the time Mom was at the hospital today. One new development is that Grace is showing signs of startling at the sound of a clap.

During Mom's prayer time today the Holy Spirit prompted her to look up verses with "wake up" in it. She did not have her concordance with her, but she did find one verse in Ephesians. Ephesians 5:14 "for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said: "Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you."

Mom is still recovering from her surgery. She was busy pulling wall paper border off walls and doing the laundry that seems to pile up while I was talking to her. Packing continues and the move is still scheduled for this Saturday.

Please Pray For:
  • Praise for a shorter storming episode
  • Praise for the Holy Spirit guiding Mom to verses
  • Prayer for Mom's meeting with Medicaid tomorrow
  • Prayer for Grace's complete recovery
  • Prayer for a smooth move on Saturday with NO rain
  • Prayer for financial provision (If you are interested in helping in this way please e-mail info@gracegoodday.com)

One Box At A Time

Mom was very tired tonight so this post will be short. Mom is still not a 100% after her surgery which is to be expected. She is feeling some aches and pains as well as extra tired. She will have one follow up appointment in two weeks and then the gull bladder issues should be behind her.

Grace had a calm day today. Mom got to learn some new things in order to care for Grace at home. She reported that some nurses are more interested in training her and Dad than others. Today, she had a great nurse who spent a lot of time with Mom teaching her the tricks of the trade.

The packing continues one box at a time. If you live close to the family and are available to help with the move on Saturday they would sure appreciate it! They are in the need of man power as well as anyone with a large vehicle.

Please Pray For:
  • Praise for a calm day for Grace
  • Prayer for storming to cease completely
  • Prayer for a smooth move with lots of help moving
  • Prayer for continued recovery for Mom
  • Prayer for nurses who are excited to teach Mom and Dad how to care for Grace
  • Financial Provision for the family (please e-mail info@gracegoodday.com if you are interested in helping in this area)

Filling Bowls

Today, Grace continued what has become a 3-day cycle. She finished storming yesterday, and has been calm since then.

She has been actively looking around and such, but it's very difficult to determine what is based in reflex and what is Grace deciding to do something. With the way neurology works, until Grace gets up out of bed, pulls out the feeding tube herself, and says "Mommy, I'd like some macaroni and cheese, please" it's all a guess.

Mom and dad are becoming comfortable caring for Grace. They only have a few things left to check off the list before Grace can return home. We found out tonight that Grace's everyday medicines are home-friendly, and the doctors have been able to control Grace's blood pressure during storming with only the use of home-friendly medicines. Another hurdle cleared.

Packing continues for next weekend's move. Anyone able to participate in that would be a huge blessing to the family!

While praying with Grace tonight, mom had a picture of a description from the Bible. The Bible refers to prayers as something that fill bowls. Mom said that she feels like we need to fill the bowls with prayer, and when the bowl begins to overflow then more breakthroughs will occur.

Please pray for
  • Bowls filled with prayers for Grace
  • Grace's and mom's complete healing
  • Financial provision for the family (e-mail info@gracegoodday.com if you would like information on to help).

Moving

There are lots of developments today.

Grace has been storming for much of today, although it is noteworthy that the storming hasn't been raising Grace's blood pressure as much as it once was. Also, over the last week or so the pattern has been 2 days of no storming followed by a full day of storming, and medication has been ineffective against the day of storming.

A consultation with the doctors led to the idea of attempting to keep the every-third-day-storming pattern while only using methods that could be used after Grace returns home. If Grace can be stabilized using home-approved methods, it makes it more likely that Grace will return home on the schedule discussed previously.

Meanwhile, back at the "ranch" (the Grace-friendly home that the family is preparing to move to), things are coming along well. Mom and Dad have signed a lease for the new place, and are planning to move in next weekend. The home doesn't have a fridge, which would be a bit of a challenge. Someone has graciously volunteered to purchase one for the family, but if anyone in proximity to the family is willing to part with a spare unused fridge sitting around the house, that might be a preferable option. (please mail info@gracegoodday.com if you fit into this category.)

While on the topic of moving next weekend, the family needs help. Mom just had gall-bladder surgery last Friday, is still recovering, and doesn't need to be lifting heavy things. Yet, Mom and Dad have an entire household worth of stuff that needs to be packed up and moved. People have been very gracious in volunteering to help here! If you could help and would like more information on helping in this way, please e-mail inf@gracegoodday.com, and we'll hook you up!

Please pray for:
  • Praise for so many awesome people volunteering to help out!
  • Complete healing for mom and Grace
  • The blessing of a refrigerator in whatever form it chooses to come.
  • Wisdom and endurance to work out the details of Grace's return home
  • Financial provision for the family (info@gracegoodday.com if you would like information)

Surgery A Sucess

I was surprised that I got to talk to Mom tonight even after her having surgery today. Now that I think about it I should not have been surprised because Mom is a trooper and lets nothing stop her. Mom's surgery went well. She is home enjoying every minute of being spoiled by Dad. Dad even brought her dinner in bed :)

They got the rental home! The home is in a great neighborhood, cute yard and very well kept up inside and out. They are moving next Saturday! Dad's mom is coming down to help in any way she can with the move and the boys. Mom assured me that she would not be lifting any boxes after her surgery!

Mom and Dad obviously could not be at the hospital with Grace today due to mom's surgery. According to the night nurse, Grace had begun storming again. It seems to be a cycle lately of 2-3 days without storming and then less that 24 hours of storming. Mom commented that, "she sleeps well when this specific nurse is on duty because she has 24 years of experience".

Mom is continually reassured by the oldest brother bringing up Grace's name in conversation more as of late. Tonight they were praying at dinner and he asked to go see Grace again in the hospital.

Please Pray For:
  • Praise for a successful surgery
  • Praise for the oldest son talking about Grace
  • Praise for the rental home
  • Prayer for storming to cease permanently
  • Prayer for endurance through this trial
  • Prayer for a smooth move to their new home
  • Prayer for complete restoration of Grace
Thank you for all those who commented! Keep it up! It was great encouragement for me to read - I cannot imagine how much more the comments will encourage the family! Thank you for fighting for and with this family!

God's Word Does Not Return Void

I had the privilege of talking to Dad tonight. Mom was busy being her usual productive self preparing the household/family for her gall bladder surgery tomorrow at 9:00am.

The house hunt continues. They have found a house that they love which has a basement and a huge porch. The Realtor is going to work on negotiating with the landlord to come to a price that fits the family's budget.

Grace has had NO storming again today so that is two days in a row! PRAISE GOD! That was the only update regarding Grace's condition, but Dad had a lot of other things to say which I will attempt to summarize.

Dad reported that they both feel a lot more confident that Grace is going to recover after last night. For those of you not at the prayer meeting at the hospital, it included people giving their own healing testimonies, prayer, scripture reading, the elders anointing Grace and her parents with oil and a chance for the parents to talk about the situation and give thanks. Dad said it was amazing how Grace reacted to the prayer in the room. She was the most reactive he has seen her. He said he hadn't seen her do what she was doing unless she had been storming, but she wasn't storming because her heart rate was just fine. She was moving all around side to side, moving her head and her toes!

Dad has been listening to the Bible on tape in the car while he drives to the hospital. Yesterday, he listened to the story in 2 Kings 13:21 "Once while some Israelites were burying a man, suddenly they saw a band of raiders; so they threw the man's body into Elisha's tomb. When the body touched Elisha's bones, the man came to life and stood up on his feet." It caught Dad by surprise in how much it related to Grace's situation and he took note of it. Then at the prayer meeting last night someone brought up that very same scripture. This was a great encouragement and confirmation to Dad. Dad also talked about how encouraging it was to hear,
"So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it." Isaiah 55:11.

Thank you for all of you who are praying and checking the updates frequently. Just a reminder that the family does read the posts and all the comments. They appreciate the comments and the sheer number of comments tells them people are still fighting alongside them. A simple "I am praying for you" let's them know you are still in this with them. This has been a long battle so far and they need encouragement that we will not give up! So, I am challenging all of you to comment when you read the blog even if it is just a few words. It would be amazing if EVERYONE who read the blog tomorrow (Friday) would comment because I do not think ANYONE (including the family) realizes how many people are in this with them.

Please Pray For:
  • Praise for the huge turnout for the prayer meeting yesterday
  • Praise for NO storming today
  • Praise for the family being greatly encouraged and refreshed from the prayer meeting yesterday
  • Prayer for mom's surgery tomorrow
  • Prayer for complete restoration for Grace
  • Prayer for favor with the rental home's landlord

Living and Active

"For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart." -Hebrews 4:12

Grace was "Very Active" tonight, apparently soaking in the prayers of the large number of people who turned out at the hospital tonight. Dad pointed out that Grace was moving her head, eyes, and toes more tonight than he had seen in a long time.

Grace stopped storming at approx 4am this morning and hasn't started again since. This is awesome progress!

The doctors pulled Grace's catheter a few days ago and have been allowing her kidneys to work again. The staff are checking periodically to make sure that everything is working well in that realm.

Mom had another busy day today trying to put things in order. As is typical of mothers, she's found it challenging to find time for lunch. Today in the 5 minutes mom had available before the medicaid home visit, mom became resourceful and downed an ever-nutritious can of peas. mmmmmmm. peas....

There's plenty of things to be thankful for today:
  • Favor with the medicaid rep!
  • Lots of wonderful people supporting the family!
  • Tons of movement from Grace!
Please pray for:
  • Complete restoration of all brain function for Grace
  • An end to the storming and the other undetermined episodes
  • Mom's successful gall bladder surgery coming up this Friday
  • A home with a Grace-friendly floor plan
  • Childcare for the boys until Grace comes home
  • Financial Provision (If you are interested please contact info@gracegoodday.com for more information.)

Hugs

There is not much to report today.

Grace's brothers came to visit her today. While her oldest brother was giving Grace a hug, Grace began to storm for the first time in days, and she kept going for quite a while.

Mom is also making progress in getting medicaid to help fund Grace's care at home.

As a quick reminder:
  • The family and members of their church are meeting at Grace's hospital in the chapel this Wednesday. 7:15pm Eastern time to pray for Grace.
    • You're invited to the hospital if you can make it there. If you're unsure where the chapel is, any of the friendly people at the information desks would be happy to direct you.
If you can't be there, your prayers are still very much appreciated!

Please pray for:
  • Complete restoration of all brain function for Grace
  • An end to the storming and the other undetermined episodes
  • Mom's successful gall bladder surgery coming up this Friday
  • Childcare for the boys until Grace comes home
  • Financial Provision (If you are interested please contact info@gracegoodday.com for more information.)

3 days and counting

Tonight will make three days with Grace having no storming episodes. Praise God for his faithfulness! Mom and Dad are excited to see this progress in the "natural".

The family is busy finding a rental home. They have looked at a few and are trying to balance size with the right neighborhood. Grace's homecoming is coming soon and the family continue to get all the details in order for that joyous day.

Mom and Dad were going to spend some quality time together tonight so our conversation was short and to the point, therefore, this post is short and to the point :)

Please remember that the family's church and all friends/family are welcome to join the family in praying for Grace at the chapel in the hospital at 7:15 on Wednesday. If you are from out of town or cannot make it on Wednesday we encourage you to set up your own prayer meeting on Wednesday and if possible near the same time. For any of you in Nashville, TN we are holding a prayer meeting at our house and any and all of you are welcome to come. Please e-mail info@gracegoodday.com for more information.

Please Pray For:
  • Praise for storming ceasing
  • Praise for time of prayer on Wednesday
  • Prayer for complete restoration of Grace's brain functioning
  • Prayer for the perfect combination of size and neighborhood to be found in a rental house for the family
  • Prayer for endurance to figure out all the details surrounding Grace's homecoming
  • Prayer for provision financially (If you are interested in helping in this area please e-mail info@gracegoodday.com)

"Call me if you need anything."

Reports were that Grace had a rough night storming, but by the time mom got there today everything was great. Mom spent a peaceful several hours with Grace.

Mom and dad are becoming more comfortable caring for Grace. Today the nurses left mom alone in the room to perform some every-day tasks for Grace saying on the way out: "call me if you need anything."

The current opinion from Neurology is that Grace's odd episodes are neither seizures nor storming. They theorize that it could be Grace's brain function starting back up and then becoming overstimulated by the new activity... They make it sound like an old commercial building furnace starting up with the first chill of fall. Yes, it's tucked away in the corner of a dark, damp and dusty basement. Yes, the moving parts have been stationary for so long that they may be rusty. When it starts up the first time, gosh does it ever make an ear-splitting noise that makes it sound like it's going to tear the building apart, but once it gets going the rust wears off, everything returns to normal, and it's a huge blessing to everyone inside who gets to enjoy it's warmth once again.

The latest word today was that Grace's homecoming was scheduled for 3 weeks from Sunday.

A group from the church is getting together at the hospital on Wednesday to pray for Grace. Mom wanted us to invite everyone who feels led to attend - even out of town guests who feel so inclined. Please e-mail info@gracegoodday.com if you would like more information on this event.

Beyond that, mom and dad have a realtor friend helping them look for rental homes (they're not up for making the decision of buying one at this point). Mom and dad are also going out on a date night for the first time in quite a while.

Please pray for:
  • Complete recovery for Grace
  • The right place for the family to live at the right price
  • Mom's gall bladder surgery on Friday
  • Childcare for the boys until Grace comes home
  • Financial Provision (If you are interested please contact info@gracegoodday.com for more information.)

Homecoming on the horizon

Neurology looked at the EEG and they feel that the results are inconclusive. They do not believe they are seizures, but at the same time they do not believe the episodes are storming either. Mom is not convinced and will be getting a second opinion.

Mom took the oldest brother to see Grace today. He reacted much more positively to seeing Grace this time. He recognized that it was her and called her by name. He even gave her a kiss before he left. This was such a precious time for mom to see him interact with his sister.

Mom is greatly encouraged by how much she has been getting accomplished to prepare for Grace's homecoming. She is currently working on getting their family car retrofitted for Grace's needs. The current view is that Grace will come home three weeks from Friday.

Please Pray For:
  • Praise for Grace's time with her brother
  • Complete restoration of Grace's brain functioning
  • Wisdom for Mom and Dad in preparing for Grace's homecoming
  • Mom's Gall Bladder surgery on Friday
  • Childcare for the boys until Grace comes home
  • Financial Provision (If you are interested please contact info@gracegoodday.com for more information.)

Hard to say if today was a good day

Editor's note: Mom's surgery is NEXT week Friday. Sorry about the misunderstanding.

Mom stayed the night in the hospital to keep a watchful eye on Grace and her possible seizures. Thankfully, mom was able to train the Patient Attendant to watch for the possible seizure signs so mom could at least catch a cap nap before returning to the boys and her household chores.

Mom and the patient attendant were able to document two incidents that they believe were seizures when the EEG was hooked up to Grace. Now, the wait is on for neurology to read the results. The 24 hour watch ended at 10am this morning and when I talked to mom at 8:30pm neurology had not gotten back to her yet.

The episodes that mom expects are seizures cause Grace to be abnormally unresponsive immediately following the episode. This is unsettling to mom and is very different than the storming.

The 24 hour vigil was not without humor though. A nurse came in and washed her hands after taking care of Grace. She accidentally left the water running. Mom was in bed holding Grace and Grace was hooked up to the EEG, therefore, mom could not move Grace without the help of a nurse for fear of the EEG becoming disconnected. All of the sudden mom noticed the water running and also saw that it was soon going to overflow the sink. She tried to get to the page button, but with Grace in her arms she could not do it without possibly disconnecting one of the EEG probes. She layed there now staring at the sink indeed overflowing onto the floor, but she could not move. She was able to reach the phone though. She called down to the main help desk because that is the number she could remember and asked to be transferred to Rehab. They were quite confused and said "you are in Rehab" - she was becoming increasingly frustrated due to the flooding and said "I know - I do not have time to explain just transfer me to Rehab" so they did. She also noted that she did not have the time to be on hold or transferred six times before they got it right - that it was very important they got her right to rehab. So, Rehab answered and she said "Hi - I am in Grace's room could you come in" - they were obviously quite confused and started to ask questions. She said - just get over here. The nurse shows up and sees the flood and was quite embarrassed. Well, needless to say that nurse left Grace's room the rest of the night using hand sanitizer rather than washing her hands in the sink! It is good to see the humor even when times are tough :)

Please Pray For:
  • Praise for mom and dad's dedication to Grace and her care
  • Praise for moments to laugh at
  • Prayer for wisdom for the medical staff regarding seizures/storming
  • Prayer for storming/seizures to seize
  • Prayer for mom's gall bladder surgery NEXT Friday
  • Prayer for childcare to be provided for the boys for the month of April and until Grace gets out of the hospital
  • Prayer for financial provision (if you are interested in helping in this area please e-mail info@gracegoodday.com)

Overnight vigil

There has been so much commotion and white noise in Grace's situation that sometimes it can be easy to overlook the miracles that are taking place. 7 Weeks ago, the hospital staff said Grace had no chance to survive the night. Today Mom was having a conversation with a nurse, and no less than 5 times, Grace overcame the effect of the drugs in her system and turned her eyes and head to look at the person speaking!

It's difficult to say how active Grace would be without the drugs. Presumably with the help of the drugs, Grace did not storm today. The drugs are given in doses administered approx every 3 hours. When Grace reaches the end of those 3 hours, she reaches a point where the drugs haven't totally worn off, but the concentrations have dropped enough that she is much more active. During those times, it is very apparent that Grace is still in there.

Perhaps the biggest challenge today is that for 30 minutes Grace had what all the doctors (save the neurologists) are calling a seizure. You may recall from earlier posts that some doctors thought it might be a different type of storming... Those doctors have since recanted their statements and agreed that it is a seizure. The neurologists on the other hand are reluctant to call the spade a spade. They either want data to back up the claim, or they want a neurologist to witness what appears to be a random event. This is significant because based on her research, mom believes that seizures cause much more permanent damage than storming does. To prevent seizures, the doctors need to tweak the anti-seizure meds given to Grace, but neurology is not willing to do that when they're not certain that Grace is having seizures at all.

Mom put her foot down today and asked the neurologists to do a test that would verify that the episodes are seizures. Being the nice and helpful people that they are, the neurologists said they wouldn't examine all the data, but only specific timeframes considered as possible candidates. To just get this part over with, Mom is going to do a 24-hour vigil with Grace to record the times she thinks that Grace might be having a seizure. She's probably going to be just a bit tired after that.

Mom also saw great progress today lining up funding for Grace to come home. You see, the family insurance plan only covers 60 days/year of in-home care. Mom phrased it very nicely when she said "That's nice. what about the other 300 days in the year?" She's made great strides toward getting Medicare and other grants/programs in place to cover the rest.

In other news, mom is scheduled to have her gall bladder surgery on Friday. The operation will last about an hour, she'll return home about 2 hours later, and to recover she won't be able to lift anything (like her children) weighing over 30 pounds for the duration of the following 10 days.

Please pray for:
  • Continued miracles and complete healing for Grace
  • An accurate and quick diagnosis for Grace's episodes
  • The end of all storming/seizures... quickly!
  • Healing for Mom's Gall Bladder
  • The neurology department, that they might stop being "poopy"
  • Financial provision (If you are interested in helping in this area please e-mail info@gracegoodday.com for more information.)
Thank you for your posts and comments! they are very encouraging for Mom and Dad!

I don't know if the local news media is still tracking this story or not, but just in case, it's probably still best not to use mom or dad or Grace's real names.

On behalf of the family, we here at Grace's Good Day would like to thank you dearly for your thoughts, support, and prayers! It's exciting to see the results of those prayers unfold on a daily basis!

Going up and down the slide

Tonight's title comes from mom's memory of Grace at the park. She went to the park today with Grace's brothers. The oldest brother climbs up the steps, reaches the top, and starts to slide down. He then hangs on for a moment to the bars at the top of the slide before letting go. Then once he reaches the bottom, he asks mommy where the stairs are again, as if he somehow didn't remember from the last 9 times he went down the slide.

Grace used to hang on at the top of the slide too.

Grace had a rough day today. She's still in rehab, and had a calm morning until 11am. At 11am, the teams tried to do therapy, which kicked off a storming episode that lasted for 9 hours and hadn't stopped by the time when mom called us.

The new pediatrician continues to be involved and take charge. While the ICU doctors seem to go for the "long ball" in diagnosing all kinds of "exotic" infections, the pediatrician is more experienced with people in Grace's situation, and is willing to consider a possible need to mitigate less dramatic situations such as reflux.

Mom continues to be convinced that Grace is experiencing short periodic seizures, which mom's research shows is more detrimental to Grace's health than storming. This is an elevated concern now, because the pediatrician hasn't seen and isn't convinced that there have been any "seizures," suspects that Grace's anti-seizure medicine could be contributing to the storming. This leaves mom with the odd challenge of first convincing the pediatrician that there was seizure and second to change the seizure medication. It's been an uphill battle.

Add to that, the fact that Grace is "stable" for her current condition, and thus doesn't belong in ICU. however, The storming is more than the rehab team is used to, so their inclination is to send Grace back to ICU. They called mom tonight saying that they gave her 2 doses of a narcotic that failed to stop the storming. Any more narcotic may affect Grace's breathing and make her go back to a respirator. They admit that they're not totally sure what to do next.

Add to that the facts that mom and dad are already tired, Mom's gall bladder started acting up again last night, and mom is beginning to wade through the mountain of bureaucracy necessary to retrofit their car with accommodations for Grace.

Mom once again said how much comfort she feels at how many people are praying for Grace! Keep the comments coming!

Please pray for:

  • Complete healing for Grace!
  • Financial provision (If you are interested in helping in this area please e-mail info@gracegoodday.com for more information.)
  • Healing for mom's gall bladder
  • Peace for the family

Moving on out again...

Grace spent the day with Mom today. Mom noticed that her heart rate seems to be higher, but the storming seemed to be more under control. The doctors are saying that they hope to transfer her back to the rehab floor tomorrow.

The big concern for Grace is still the balance of all the drugs. The doctors need to use the drugs to control the storming, but at the same time these drugs sedate Grace to the point that is difficult to tell what she can and cannot do. Grace when heavily sedated keeps her eyes shut. There were times today that Grace had her eyes opened and Mom would move to the other side of the bed and Grace would turn her eyes that direction. Grace tired of this quickly most likely due to the sedative nature of the drugs.

The new pediatrician who has taken a great interest in Grace will be referred to as Dr. L. from here on out. His staff, especially the social workers, have been extremely helpful and efficient as far as tackling the financial side of this hospital stay. They have informed Mom and Dad of many details and potential problems that can be avoided with the right knowledge and know how. The family's insurance has limited care for home care/therapy and therefore the social workers are helping the family tap into several different resources to provide this for Grace in the future if it is needed.

Please Pray For:
  • Praise for Dr. L. and his awesome team
  • Praise for Grace's expected transfer to Rehab tomorrow
  • Praise for decreased storming
  • Prayer for storming to cease
  • Prayer for full restoration for Grace
  • Prayer for financial provision (If you are interested in helping in this area please e-mail info@gracegoodday.com for more information.)
  • Prayer for smooth transition to the Rehab floor

Encourgement comes in all shapes and sizes

Mom spent the day at the hospital today with Grace well Dad manned the fort at home with the boys. Grace had a peaceful day with no storming until 8pm today! Praise God! Mom was able to talk to the pediatrician about a possible new plan of action with the drugs. There are drugs that may be more effective and have no sedative effect for Grace that could be given through the spine. Mom is doing a lot of reading on this course of action. The advantage to this is that the drug would be able to be given in a different location which has shown to have a more positive effect on children with Grace's needs. Ultimately, if this course of action worked they would do a surgery in order to install a pump to give Grace the medicine she needs. Mom is attracted to this idea one because the current medicine plan does not seem to be effective and two because these drugs would not put Grace in a sedative state. It is hard to see or for Grace to show us how her brain has healed when she is forced to be "not there" by the drugs.

Mom and Dad believe and know that "Grace is in there"! She is opening her eyes and moving them in a direction and a short time after that she will move her head that same direction. There is a delay between the two actions, but they are definitely purposeful. Praise God!

Many posts ago we told you about a little girl in a similar condition as Grace who is the same age. Mom and this little girl's mom were able to connect and support each other. Well, we have good news! This little girl has shown tremendous progress just as Grace has, but it looks a little different. This little girl is making sounds which the doctors have said are the beginnings of speech, moving her feet and sitting up on her own for a short time. This is a great encouragement for Mom and Dad to see yet another situation where the doctors said there was no hope to be redeemed through our hope in GOD!

The mom of this little girl has told Mom that they needed to exchange phone numbers because Grace and her daughter were going to have to a play date in the future :)

Please Pray For:
  • Praise for encouraging news of others who are in a similar state as Grace
  • Praise for financial provision (If you are interested in helping in this area please e-mail info@gracegoodday.com for more info.)
  • Praise for the many people (I would venture to say 100's) that are praying for Grace daily!
  • Praise for the availability of this new pediatrician who has taken such an interest in Grace!
  • Praise for all those visiting Grace at the hospital and spending time with her when Mom and Dad cannot be there
  • Wisdom concerning giving medication through the spine
  • Prayer for continued balance between marriage, family, work and the hospital/Grace's care

Again, thankful you to all of you who check the blog regularly for updates in order to know more how to pray! The family and we are greatly encouraged by the comments! Keep them coming! Please don't think that you have to have something long to say in order to comment - if you have something long and elaborate that is awesome. But a simple "I am praying for you" or Bible verse is great encouragement too! Encouragement comes in all shapes and sizes and your words of encouragement may not look like someone else's, but that does NOT mean they are any less needed or important to the family!

Confirmation

Mom had lunch with the girls from bible study yesterday. She said it was nice to get out and have some much needed girl time.

Dad spend the evening at the hospital with Grace. The nurse report was that Grace had a good day with little storming until 1pm. The pediatrician the family is working with came to rounds even on the weekend. He has really taken a great interest in Grace's care and has a whole set of fresh ideas. He shares a similar philosophy of care with Mom and Dad which has been a relief.

The doctors are still working with the drugs and trying to figure out the best combination of them for Grace. The pediatrician has asked that the drugs be given to Grace in the smallest dosage possible and then move up as necessary rather than giving a large dose and backing off. This strategy for drug dosage was an area of great concern for Mom and she is very relieved that this pediatrician has the same view of things.

Dad and Mom have really been seeking God on a new living situation to accommodate the needs of Grace. Mom was talking to God about this a week ago and felt strongly that God was asking her to stand in faith that Grace is healed and they would not need a new place to stay. Mom felt like she needed confirmation before she acted on that. Well, the apartment they saw as "perfect" and even had put a deposit down on fell through. Mom was extremely disappointed and frustrated until Dad pointed out, "You said you needed a confirmation for God asking you to not worry about a place to live - wouldn't this be a confirmation". Wow! So, let's stand together with them that a new place is not necessary because Grace will be walking out of that hospital chatting away!

Please Pray For:
  • Praise for time with friends for Mom
  • Praise for the financial provision that keeps pouring in (If you are interested in helping in this area please contact info@gracegoodday.com.)
  • Praise for this new pediatrician who is very committed to Grace's care
  • Praise for Mom and Dad's faith throughout this whole situation
  • Storming to cease and Grace to be completely restored
  • Wisdom for the doctors/nurses
  • Endurance and strength for the family
  • Discernment for Dad and Mom to balance between trusting that God has given them doctors for a reason, but at the same time being asked to stand in faith that GOD has healed Grace

Keep on the Sunny Side of Life

Grace's day included more sun than shadows.

Neurology did another brain scan on Grace. Those following the situation from the beginning will remember that brain scans shortly after the incident were interpreted as either sluggish or inactive. This scan showed a considerable amount more activity than the last one!

Mom spent a lot of time praying with and hanging out with Grace today. She even laid down next to Grace and watched a movie with her.

Grace's storming also lessened today, but to get there the doctors moved her from a medicine drip as needed to actual dosages. This is not something that could happen in rehab or at the family home.

In an unusual circumstance, the home the family had been looking at to accommodate Grace fell through. It appears that God may have different plans there.

Please pray for:
  • Complete healing and restoration for Grace
  • Strength and unity for dad, mom, and the family
  • Complete healing for Mom and her gall bladder
  • Financial Provision (If you are interested in this area please contact info@gracegoodday.com for more information).
  • It's pretty apparent that only God knows what's truly going on here. Please also pray for whatever else you feel led to pray for in this situation.

A Sheep in Wolf's Clothing?

Grace had an interesting day today. It's somewhat difficult to discern what is good news and what warrants prayer.

Pro?: With the use of medicines, Grace is storming less and her heart rate is coming back under control.

Con?: Grace is still stiffening and posturing in a lesser form of storming.

Pro?: Grace had an episode that neurology says is a different type of storming that indicates that Grace's brain is healing. However, to deal with the "different type of storming", neurology prescribed an anti-seizure medication.

Con?: The doctors present at the time it happened labeled the incident as a seizure. (Grace was recently taken off an anti-seizure medication as the doctors worked to reset the drug regimen. It's unclear at this point whether news of a seizure would make the situation better or worse.

Pro: Grace's new pediatrician is going to attempt to be at the doctor's daily meetings. Today he brought a host of fresh ideas to the meeting and began to take charge of Grace's care.

Please pray for:
  • Complete healing and restoration for Grace
  • Complete healing for Mom and her gall bladder
  • Financial Provision (If you are interested in this area please contact info@gracegoodday.com for more information).
  • It's pretty apparent that only God knows what's truly going on here. Please also pray for whatever else you feel led to pray for in this situation.

Rockabye

As the song goes, "Everything's gonna be alright. Rockabye"

No major updates on Grace today. For now, she's still stormin' in ICU.

Mom had her consultation for her gall bladder surgery today, and so Dad was with Grace today. He'll probably be home late, and mom is going to get some well deserved shut-eye.

We'll post more when we hear more. Possibly tonight, probably tomorrow.

Women's Intuition

The ICU doctors are at a loss to explain Grace's continued storming. They don't have any evidence to suggest a spinal infection, but have been pushing to do a spinal tap just in case. Mom has been uncomfortable with this, but didn't have a solid reason to back up her uneasiness - until today. The main doctor called in sick today, and when Mom consulted with the acting physician, she was informed that a spinal tap would require:
  1. Complete sedation putting Grace into a state of paralysis
  2. The reintroduction of a ventilator, which Grace has been free from for weeks
  3. Stopping the use of the g-tube, which is finally working correctly
Also, the doctor on call mentioned that the way Grace arches her back during storming would put her at an extremely high risk of being permanently damaged by a spinal tap at this point.

None of the above had been mentioned to mom and dad when the doctors recommended said procedure.

The doctors are starting over with Grace's medicines. They're assuming that Grace needs no medication, and adding things back as needed, rather than continuing with the "Well, she's been on X for a long time now" regimen. It's a process. Grace is still storming a lot.

Grace is still making great progress, despite the storming. She's opening her eyes and blinking more. The nurses no longer argue that Grace is making purposeful movement. She has the presence of mind to remove those annoying sticky tape thingys that take her pulse. (Who can blame her? If it was me, I'd be tempted to do that too!) When she's congested, she puts her hand near her throat. When the feeding tube was leaking, she would put her hand there. It's too intentional to simply chalk up to coincidence.

Mom has her appointment tomorrow to discuss options for how to deal with her gall bladder.

Please pray for:
  • Complete healing and restoration for Grace
  • Complete healing for Mom and her gall bladder
  • Total follow-through from the family's health insurance
  • An end to the storming once and for all
  • Financial Provision (If you are interested in this area please contact info@gracegoodday.com for more information).

Raspberries

Mom always keeps me on my toes - I have 12 pages of notes to summarize and share tonight. Grace's storming persists with great intensity and she has returned to the ICU. Grace "postures" her back in a 90 degree angle while laying down while storming. This is extremely difficult to watch and there is nothing in the physical realm that can be done to stop this. We know there is more than just the physical realm though! Mom shared with me today that God showed her that, "I need to stop praying for medication to control the storming and pray for God to STOP the storming"! Let us stand in agreement with her on God stopping the storming!

The severity of Grace's storming caused a Care Meeting to be called today. The doctors were very honest with Dad and Mom and "admitted" that they had never seen a case of storming this severe or last this long. The doctors are confused why she seemed to be getting better and now seems to be going back to severe storming. The doctors do not know what to do. Mom was relieved in some ways to hear this because she has suspected this for quite sometime, but it had not been verbalized.

The doctors want to do a spinal tap to check for possible infection, but Mom is very uncomfortable with this being done. She does not want risk of further infection and it seems whenever they do a procedure with Grace that an infection follows in the area of the procedure that was done. The doctors are going to wipe the slate clean as far as medications and try one at a time to see which are having a positive effect and which are not. The doctors suggested this much to Mom's excitement because Mom was actually going to ask the doctors to do this very same thing!

They are beginning to use the G-tube again and starting off slowly to make sure there will be no problems with leaking like there was in the past.

The doctors seem to think that the bouncing back between ICU and Rehab may persist. Their desire is to have her in Rehab at any point where she is stable. The date for Grace to return home has been pushed back and there is no definite date at this point. According to the doctors, Grace would need to be stable, not storming and with no need for changes of dosages of medication for a week and half in order to be sent home. We are standing in faith that Grace will blow all the doctors out of the water by walking out of the hospital while singing her praises to God!

The family's insurance policy has no life time max cap on it which is pretty much unheard of in this day and age. Well, Mom got a not so friendly call from the insurance company asking a whole bunch of uncomfortable questions and basically trying to figure a way out insurance company to get out of paying for all the medical bills that are pouring in for Grace's care. Mom is frustrated to say the least, but is not concerned or worried about it. God has provided and will continue to provide!

One of you posted a comment praying for "giggles" and "joyful times" for the family and I am happy to report that prayer was answered at bath time with the boys! The oldest son has finally mastered the art of REALLY jumping! He actually gets some air now rather than just squatting and pushing up! He is also quite fascinated with the location of his belly button and tends to get it confused with other body parts that we won't mention here in case he reads this some day when he is older :) He loves his little brother and loves to give him raspberries in all sorts of interesting locations and Mom is now in the process of teaching him boundaries :) Hearing Mom talk about the boy's interactions put a smile on my face and I could tell she was smiling while sharing with me.

Mom's prayer time was extremely encouraging today. God gave her a picture of Grace's brain in Jesus' hands. Wow - what a picture! Mom continues to stand in faith and not waver in the promise that God has given her that Grace will return to her sweet and rambunctious self. The difficult part is that this will occur in God's timing and often we want it to happen in our timing.

Mom was called by a friend today who has many children including some with special needs. This friend got her highly reccommended pediatrician to take on Grace once she returns home. The amazing part is that this pediatrician is not accepting new patients. The more amazing part is that he works out of Children's and is willing to follow Grace on a daily basis until she comes home. Wow - what an answer to prayer that we did not even know we needed to pray for!

Please pray for:
  • Storming to END permanently
  • Wisdom for parents/doctors regarding spinal tap
  • Medical Insurance to cover all expenses at 100% after deductible which is what their policy states
  • Praise for the laughter the family had with the boys during bath time
  • Praise for a pediatrician for Grace
  • Complete healing and restoration of Grace's body from head to toe
  • Financial Provision (If you are interested in this area please contact info@gracegoodday.com for more information).

Thank you to all of you who read the blog! The family appreciates your support and all your comments.

Do not pass Go...

Grace is back in ICU tonight and in need of prayer. ICU keeps stabalizing Grace with drugs not allowed in rehab. They send Grace to rehab where those drugs aren't used, and the storming starts up again. Then rehab sends Grace back to ICU.

It's a lot like calling the phone company for DSL support. Billing? Sorry, you need the local office... DSL issues? sorry, you need the tech support line...

Whatever the situation, we need your prayers to stop it.

Mom and dad have a good lead on a dwelling place that could accomodate Grace. They're looking at a few more options just to be sure.

Mom's gall bladder pain has lessened, but it's still there. She's still meeting with the surgeon on Wednesday.

Please pray for:
  • Complete recovery for Grace and an immediate end to the storming
  • An end to the continual department changes for Grace
  • A resolution to mom's gall bladder pain
  • Rest and a fresh perspective for the family
  • Financial Provision (If you are interested in helping in this way please e-mail info@gracegoodday.com for more information.)

Ice cream and a Movie

Mom was sending dad out for ice cream and a movie when I talked to her. They were planning on having some much needed down time just the two of them. This is an answer to prayer in and of itself!

The family went to look at apartments today and they believe they have found the perfect place. It is 1400 square feet which is MUCH larger than their current place. It is two bedrooms with a den which is where Grace would be. The den is right off of the main living area. The apartments is 5 minutes from their current place so Dad will still be very close to work.

Dad and the boys spent the day at the zoo while Mom was at the hospital. Grace is doing about the same. The storming persists and Mom is becoming concerned about some of the possible side effects that the drugs could have on Grace. The drugs do help with the storming, but on the other hand the drugs could cause other serious problems.

Mom's gull bladder issues persist. She is in a lot of pain and is having trouble sleeping due to the pain. Her appointment with the surgeon to discuss surgery is this coming Wednesday.

Mom had some quality time in scripture with Grace today. She was reminded in one of the Psalms to rejoice and to look back at the miracles God has done in the Bible and also with Grace. She said that sometimes it is hard not to let go of the promise God has given her of healing Grace, but she continues to persevere.

Please pray for:
  • Complete restoration for Grace
  • Storming to cease immediately
  • Mom's gull bladder - upcoming possible surgery
  • Details to fall into place for moving to a better place for Grace
  • Medical staff to have wisdom with Grace's care
  • Rest for the family
  • Times of laughter and joy amongst this storm
  • Financial Provision (If you are interested in helping in this way please e-mail info@gracegoodday.com for more information.)

Making a Comeback

Grace continued her 3-day streak of consistent improvements today!

She is still storming, but less so than she was yesterday. The doctors are doing physical therapy again!

Grace appears to be clear of infection. The doctor overseeing that aspect of Grace's care didn't feel the need to increase the dosage of antibiotic, but he felt that it was important to continue the dose for the typical duration. The doctors did a culture of some of the old tubes they replaced from Grace's lungs and found evidence that there was an infection in Grace's lungs.

The doctors did find evidence of blood in Grace's stomach, but an x-ray turned out to be normal.

They replaced the g-tube, and the new one doesn't appear to be leaking!

On the mental activity front, Grace appears to be moving her hands to grab whichever of the tubes the doctors happen to be adjusting as they adjust them.

Mom's gall bladder issues came back today. She was examined at the hospital and told that the situation again wasn't an emergency, despite it being painful. Mom has a consultation scheduled for next Wednesday to discuss what surgery would involve.

Mom and dad looked at a rental home, but decided it wasn't for them. They intend to keep looking for a 3-bedroom single level first-floor rental.

Please pray for:
  • Storming to cease and full brain functioning to become apparent to those around her
  • Protection against infections
  • Upcoming move
  • Ability to get out of their current lease with no fees or other problems
  • Health for the entire family
  • Financial Provision (If you are interested in helping in this play please e-mail info@gracegoodday.com)

Two days - that makes a streak!

Grace had a fairly peaceful day today. She was without storming from 8am until 3pm after a rough night of storming last night. But, even the storming last night was not seriousness enough to send her back to the ICU. Praise God!

They are continuing to investigate why her bladder is not emptying fully and the link it may have to the bladder infection. Mom suspects that the increase in storming recently is due to the bladder infection. They did some x-rays and scan today to see what the next step is.

The family is going to look at a 3 bedroom rental home that is 2 minutes from their current apartment. If the place gets their approval they hope to move in the next week. This would involve the family needing to get out of their current lease. Mom has talked to the landlord to see a way around the fees associated with breaking their current lease.

Please pray for:
  • Storming to cease and full brain functioning to become apparent to those around her
  • Protection against infections
  • G-tube leakage/wisdom in how to handle it
  • Upcoming move
  • Ability to get out of their current lease with no fees or other problems
  • Health for the entire family
  • Financial Provision (If you are interested in helping in this play please e-mail info@gracegoodday.com)
Keep up the comments - wow you all are incredible prayer warriors! I am encouraged so much each day reading the comments - I can't imagine how encouraged Dad and Mom are from your strong prayers of faith and encouragement! Keep them coming!

Rehab here we come...

Grace is out of the ICU and back in Rehab! Thank you for all your prayers. Grace's storming is under control and she has had limited storming today. Dad and Mom are excited to have Grace back to a floor that seems to have more hope! Grace will be getting back into a routine which will include therapy of all shapes and sizes.

Her G-tube is still an issue which mom is concerned about. The surgeon came in and put a smaller tube in, but it is still oozing. Again, this is the tube they use to feed her and administer drugs into her system so it is extremely important that it is working correctly.

The doctors did an emergency trach change due to a mucus plug today which resulted in Grace's breathing sounding much improved.

Dad and Mom are in discussions about bringing Grace home and what that will entail. They have decided that it would be best for Grace for them to live in a 3 bedroom ranch where she could have her own room. This move for the family may not be able to happen before Grace comes home, but will need to happen as soon as possible.

Dad and Mom both saw Grace move her head today and blink her eyes. Mom's comment was "we have to start somewhere" and this is a very good place to start!

Please pray for:
  • Storming to cease completely and full brain functioning to return
  • Dad and Mom to have endurance and health of their own during this time
  • G-tube issues to be resolved
  • Provision for a home that fits the family's needs
  • Financial Provision (If you are interested in this area please e-mail info@gracegoodday.com for more information)

Grace for the family

My conversation with Mom was brief tonight due to medical staff needing her attention. Last night was a rough night for Grace. She stormed almost all of last night and no medications seemed to help.

Today, the storming ceased for the morning and afternoon and had just started up again around 8pm when I talked to Mom. Mom has been getting into bed with her to hold her during the storming.

They have taken culture after culture and are unsure where the infections are located in Grace. They know of the bladder infection, but believe their may be more than that. They did an ultrasound today and found 1/2 liter of urine in Grace and Mom is suspecting that this caused the bladder infection and has also caused it to persist despite antibiotics.

Grace's G-tube (feeding tube) is leaking. This tube is what they use to get Grace the various medications she needs. The leaking means that Grace is not getting the full dose of the medications or any at all which could be a reason for the storming being heightened. They now have a tube in her nose/mouth to feed her and are awaiting for surgery to come in and put a smaller tube in - in order to facilitate the opening where the G-tube is at to close properly.

Dad and Mom have agreed to have one of them there 24/7 until Grace is stable. Dad has taken off of work in order to be able to do this. They will be having another Care Meeting tomorrow to discuss future plans. The Care Meeting yesterday was a few house before Grace was transferred back to ICU.

Mom is feeling symptoms of her gull bladder again - which he has not felt since the initial issues a few weeks back. Mom is exhausted in every sense of the word.

Please pray for:
  • Storming to cease
  • Quick and successful transition back to rehab
  • Strength/Endurance for Dad and Mom
  • Brain functioning to return completely
  • Mom's gull bladder
  • Financial Provision (If you are interested in this area please contact info@gracegoodday.com for more information)
Thank you for all those you check the blog and pray for all the prayer points! Thank you for standing with the family even when circumstances in the "natural" can be discouraging - God is doing far more than we can ask or imagine! Keep up the comments on the blog!
